Phantom Cabinet Lights by Russell Neal

One of greatest strengths that Phantom cabinet lights offers the architect, builder, or designer is a full range of applications that remove the limits of what you can and cannot light in a build out. Our fixtures can be configured to install directly into new construction cabinets, literally becoming a part of the furniture itself and remaining undetectable from a normal human vantage point. Custom display cabinets, kitchen cabinets, and bookcases can all be constructed with Phantom linear strip lights pre-installed and ready to illuminate their respective contents.

Phantom fixtures also offer more aesthetic flexibility than standard-model linear cabinet lights. The true hallmark of superior cabinet lighting is a color temperature compliments both the wood of the cabinet and the contents thereof. Most interior designers have theretofore felt compelled to restrict their choices to xenon, simply because it has the warmest and most robust of color temperature. This is changing, however, due to a new, patented lamping technology that allows a Phantom LED festoon lamp to equal the luminance output of a xenon lamp and produce a color temperature (2800K) that is such a close match to xenon that you cannot easily distinguish between the two unless you operate them side by side. LED offers the advantages of a heatless light source that consumes little power, making it an ideal luminaire for showcasing displays for long periods of time. Other color temperatures are available in 2950K or 5000K color temperatures, and may work better in certain custom applications than our xenon equivalent. Please keep in mind as well that if you still requisition xenon lamps, the dimmability of our lights allows you to still minimize heat output and extend lamp life at will. See our LED lamp comparison chart for a full explanation of festoon lamp types.

Color temperature alone, however, will not guarantee a superior aesthetic at the end of the day. When lighting displays and bookcases, you will achieve maximum results if you use fixtures that are concealed. While concealed fixtures can be found in many places on the open market, the challenge that many architects and designers often face is finding a concealed lighting source that also distributes light in an even and pleasing fashion. The only way to really accommodate the demand for concealment with the demand for precision lighting is to build a cabinet light that is custom-sized to the individual shelves. Mounting the strip light behind the shelf reveal hides it from open view and allows the festoon lamps that populate its surface to direct light downward and backward onto display contents or book spines. This produces a clean; even wash of decorative lighting from a completely hidden source that is the source of our motto, “See the Light, Not the Fixture.”

When installing our Phantom cabinet lights in new kitchen cabinets, custom cabinets, decorative displays, curio cabinets, and private libraries, builders and designers have a much easier time fitting our equipment to their handiwork than they have when working with standard-model equivalents. For one thing, the customized nature of our product makes it a hand-in-glove fit to the shelves they are installing in whatever cabinet they are constructing. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, our patented wireless cabinet lighting technology allows for a quick installation using only buss bars, metal shelf supports, and brass contact pads. Buss bars are manufactured to match the vertical dimensions of cabinet sides and route into the exterior walls of cabinets. Metal shelf supports are attached to the cabinet interior by screws. Brass contact pads are installed on the undersurface of shelves, and these pads complete a wireless electrical surface when the shelf is laid on top of the supports. The entire installation process takes only as much time as needed to route the channels for the buss bars and attach the shelf supports, contact pads, and cabinet lighting strips.

Occasionally, we are contacted by designers who want to know if we can light existing displays that are either very old or feature unique structural nuances. Our answer is always yes, provided the cabinet does NOT have a mirrored back plane or glass backing. For designers looking to upgrade the appearance of existing displays that lack adequate lighting, Phantom engineers have developed a number of ingenious retrofit wiring methods, custom trims, and ingenious installation methods that will allow you to install our fixtures in any type of cabinet with a solid back plane. These projects are best worked out in partnership with a cabinet lighting specialist who can customize not only the product, but the method of installation to your particular upgrade or interior design plans.
